And the happier the bees, the happier the beekeeper

Every drop of Meli Honey comes from beekeepers with whom Meli has worked for many years. However, what truly makes our honey stand out is that these beekeepers work all over the world.

By working with beekeepers from different continents, our Taste Masters select the finest honeys this planet has to offer. Certain flower species in floral meadows from southern countries are in fact an even more interesting and larger playground for bees, allowing for an improved pollination process. Because, after all, the best nectar comes from the brightest flowers, and from the happiest bees.

Beekeeper care for their bees as if they were their own babies. For instance, they pay a lot of attention to suitable hives or proper beehives. And to make sure the bees can always pollinate new and fresh flowers, they regularly move these nesting sites to new, green places. This keeps the bees active and healthy -and therefore happy- and allows them to continue making the tastiest honey.

Thus, beekeepers ensure that the bees can always produce enough honey and harvest honey without harming the bee colony.

Fewer and fewer bees? That’s not natural

Cheerfully buzzing bees are mostly found in a biodiverse, natural environment and lush floral meadows. Unfortunately, more and more of these genuine natural areas are disappearing. As a result, bees have to travel ever greater distances between floral meadows to find honey, leaving them with less energy to survive winters. And this is just one of the many reasons why there are fewer and fewer bees. Diseases, pesticides, climate change, etc. are also causing declining bee populations.

Transparency is the best flavour guarantee

Food labelling information is strictly regulated and governed by European legislation. Meli Honey consists of honeys from different countries, both from the European Union and beyond. Hence the indication ‘Mixed EU/non-EU honey’ on our Meli Honey jars.

The sweet truth about honey

Meli Honey, like other honeys, is a 100% natural product and it is therefore illegal to add or extract anything. So, Meli does not add any sugars to its honey. The sugars in honey are 100% natural, making honey a natural source of energy. Additional factoid: honey’s sweetness value is 20% higher than refined sugar, so you need to use less of it.

Warm advocate of cold-spun honey

Spinning means: extract honey out of the combs by centrifugal force. This spinning process is done at the beekeeper’s premises, and always at room temperature, hence the name ‘cold spinning’.

100% biodiversity

Meli is fully committed to biodiversity and bee conservation because, after all, bees are our greatest ally. Therefore, Meli enthusiastically supports any initiative to maintain or further expand the bee population. We put our weight behind Bee Week, sponsor large bee displays and we donate bee hotels and flower seeds on a regular basis. And to ensure the bee’s future, we work with local beekeepers and support scientific research.

Natural through and through

Honey, with its high nutritional value, is one of Mother Nature’s most wonderful products. It contains vitamins, minerals, amino acids and antioxidants. Like fruit, honey also contains natural sweeteners that are necessary in our diet. It doesn’t contain refined sugars, and because of the enzymes the bees add to the nectar, the complex sugars have often already been partially reduced to simple ones. Conclusion? Honey is a natural product that is good for you.

Meli, so much more than just honey
